About the Panchakarma

The word Udwarthanam is a combination of two words (Urdhwa + Varthanam). Urdhwa means upward, while Varthanam means to move. It was given the name "Udwartanam" because this massage stroke is conducted in an upward motion, or elevation.

During an Udwarthanam session, a specially prepared herbal powder is used to massage the body in an upward direction. The herbal powder is usually made from a combination of various finely ground herbs, grains, and minerals. The massage therapist applies the powder to the body, using long and vigorous strokes to create friction and generate heat.

Udwarthanam is believed to have several potential benefits:

  • Detoxification: The deep massage techniques used in Udwarthanam stimulate the lymphatic system, promoting the elimination of toxins from the body. It can help improve circulation, remove stagnant energy, and support the body's natural detoxification processes.

  • Fat reduction and weight management: Udwarthanam is often recommended for individuals aiming to reduce excess body fat or manage their weight. The friction generated during the massage helps break down fat cells, improve metabolism, and potentially reduce cellulite.

  • Exfoliation and skin rejuvenation: The herbal powder used in Udwarthanam acts as a natural exfoliant, helping to remove dead skin cells, unclog pores, and improve the texture of the skin. It can leave the skin feeling refreshed, smooth, and rejuvenated.

  • Stimulation of the nervous system: The vigorous and rhythmic movements of the massage stimulate the nervous system, promoting relaxation, reducing stress, and improving overall well-being.

  • Improved muscle tone and flexibility: Udwarthanam can help tone the muscles and improve muscle definition. It also aids in increasing joint flexibility and mobility.

Udwarthanam is typically performed by trained Ayurvedic therapists who select the herbal powder blend based on the individual's dosha imbalances and specific needs. The treatment duration can vary, but it usually lasts around 30-45 minutes.
